[US] The 2008 James S. McDonnell Awards at The McDonnell Foundation
In 1950, James S. McDonnell established the McDonnell Foundation, incorporated as a private Foundation. The Foundation has pursued his goals by supporting scientific, educational, and charitable causes locally, nationally, and internationally.
The organization was renamed the James S. McDonnell Foundation in 1984 in honor of its founder. In 2005 the Foundation awarded approximately $15.8 million in grants. Since its inception, the McDonnell Foundation has awarded over $310 million in grants. Fair market value of Foundation assets were about $501 million in 2005.
21st Century Research Awards are designed to support research projects with a high probability of generating new knowledge and insights. Projects submitted for funding consideration should be at an early, even preliminary stage of development, and should be intended to break new ground or to challenge commonly-held assumptions.
Projects submitted should be sufficiently novel, cross-disciplinary, or heterodox so that they have a strong likelihood of influencing the development of new ways of thinking about important problems.
21st Century Research Awards provide adequate, flexible funding over a sufficient time period to allow investigators to pursue and develop innovative directions to their research programs. A maximum of $450,000 total costs can be requested and the funds can be expended over a minimum of 3 years or a maximum of 6 years.

In 2008, Scholar Awards are only available in the Understanding Human Cognition program area. Scholar Awards provide largely unrestricted funding over a sufficient time period to allow investigators to pursue and develop new directions to their research programs. For this reason, once you have received a James S. McDonnell Scholar Award, you are not eligible to receive another Scholar Award.
